Procrastination is a huge problem and can become a chronic disease if you don't stop it in time. The more you procrastinate, the more insecure you become. The more insecure you become, the more frightened you become. The more frightened you become, the more you procrastinate…
The only way to get out of this downward spiral is to take ACTION! You need to start beating procrastination!
Of course, that’s easier said than done because taking action is the most difficult thing you can ask a procrastinator to do.
But realize that inertia is the reason you are stuck – an object at rest remains at rest.
But there’s hope ☺
The secret in breaking this vicious circle is to develop better habits by focussing on a couple of basic things. Now, don’t try and overhaul your whole life – that’s like New Year’s Resolutions – almost guaranteed to fail.
To start with focus on one keystone habit. A habit that can create a ripple effect through your life. If you change your habits, you will change your results that will then change your mindset.
To start with you need to find what your “non-serving” or bad habits are. These could be:
- No routine
- Not getting up early
- Social Media Addiction
- Low Energy
- Lack of Vision
My problem was perfectionism. You’re probably thinking that I should be happy at being a perfectionist, but the opposite is true. Believing that you must do something perfectly is a recipe for stress. The stress is associated with the task, and you then condition yourself to avoid it..
Take one of your non-serving habits and commit to replacing that with a good habit for 30 days. Let’s say one of your non-serving habits is using the snooze button. Commit to getting up at the same time every day for 30 days.
Create a daily routine and stick to it. This routine becomes a habit.
Make a list of 4-5 most leveraged activities for the next day. (not the 25 items you normally have on your to do list – they’re all there to let you procrastinate from what you should be doing)
Work in 60-minute intervals. Set a deadline for an hour. Then take a 10-minute break. Stretch your legs. Get some fresh air. Drink some water.
Get exercise. Exercise energizes your body and mind and will help you keep procrastination at bay.
Commit to doing these simple things for 30 days and to exchange one bad habit for a good one for the same period, and you will see major changes in your life. Beating Procrastination can change your life significantly!
